About the role
The Data Analyst will be an integral part of the Analytics team, focusing on gathering requirements, creating insightful Power BI reports, and delivering impactful visualisations for stakeholders. This role will bridge the gap between business needs and technical data models, ensuring that data is effectively transformed into actionable insights. The Data Analyst should be proficient in SQL, comfortable with data exploration, and capable of collaborating with Analytics Engineers to refine data models. Additionally, this role involves documenting processes and providing user training to enhance data literacy across the university.
Key responsibilities
- Requirements Gathering and Management:
- Work closely with business users and stakeholders to understand their data needs, gather requirements, and translate them into clear specifications for data models and reports.
- Conduct requirements workshops, interviews, and surveys to capture reporting needs and document them in a structured format.
- Collaborate with Analytics Engineers to ensure data models are aligned with business requirements and optimise them based on user feedback.
- Power BI Reporting and Visualisation:
- Design, develop, and maintain Power BI reports and dashboards that provide insightful, visually compelling, and actionable analytics.
- Utilise advanced Power BI features (such as DAX, Power Query, and custom visuals) to deliver high-quality, interactive reports that meet stakeholder requirements
- Ensure reports are user-friendly and well-structured, focusing on clarity, accuracy, and performance optimisation to support self-service BI.
- SQL Querying and Data Exploration:
- Use SQL to query and analyse data from Synapse or other data sources, preparing datasets for reporting and performing ad-hoc data analysis as needed.
- Collaborate on data modelling using Dimensional Modelling techniques (e.g., star and snowflake schemas) for effective reporting and analytical use cases.
- Work closely with Analytics Engineers to understand and utilise data models, validating data accuracy and identifying opportunities for model improvements.
- Conduct data validation and troubleshooting to ensure data accuracy and consistency in reporting.
- Documentation and Process Management:
- Document reporting processes, data sources, and business logic used in Power BI dashboards, ensuring transparency and ease of maintenance.
- Maintain a central repository for report documentation, requirements, and business definitions, enhancing knowledge sharing across the team and university.
- Create and update user guides, process flowcharts, and report specifications to support the understanding and use of data products.
- User Training and Support:
- Provide training sessions and workshops for business users, helping them understand how to interpret and use Power BI reports effectively.
- Develop training materials, including guides, tutorials, and FAQs, to enhance data literacy and encourage self-service BI adoption.
- Act as a point of contact for report-related inquiries, supporting users in troubleshooting issues and enhancing their analytical capabilities.
Skills and experience
- Management: Experience in gathering, documenting, and managing requirements, with a strong ability to translate business needs into technical specifications.
- Power BI Expertise: Proficiency in Power BI, including DAX, Power Query, and creating advanced visuals, to deliver user-centric reports and dashboards.
- SQL Skills: Strong knowledge of SQL for querying, analysing, and preparing data; able to communicate effectively with Analytics Engineers regarding data models.
- Data Modelling: Understanding of Dimensional Modelling techniques to provide input on report design and usability.
- Documentation Skills: Ability to document processes, data sources, and reporting requirements clearly and comprehensively to support transparency and ease of understanding.
- User Training: Experience providing training and support to end-users, enhancing their understanding and confidence in using BI tools and interpreting data.
