About the role
We are seeking an experienced 3D Environment Artist to design and develop high-fidelity Virtual Reality (VR) training scenarios. These immersive environments will support firefighter training by simulating real-world hazards, enhancing situational awareness, and strengthening operational decision-making.
Working on-site with subject matter experts, trainers, and developers, you will play a key role in shaping lifelike, interactive VR experiences that replicate emergency response conditions. This role combines artistic creativity with technical expertise to deliver visually compelling and performance-optimised environments.
Key responsibilities
- Design, develop, and optimise immersive 3D environments in Unreal Engine or Unity for VR training scenarios.
- Translate real-world firefighting and emergency response settings into high-quality, interactive virtual environments.
- Apply strong artistic principles of composition, lighting, and storytelling to create realistic and engaging scenes.
- Build and refine assets, materials, and textures to achieve visual impact and technical efficiency.
- Capture and integrate real-world elements using photogrammetry techniques.
- Collaborate closely with developers to ensure seamless integration of environments into the VR pipeline.
- Troubleshoot technical challenges and propose improvements to asset workflows.
- Apply Blueprint scripting (Unreal) or equivalent methods to support environment interactions.
- Incorporate feedback from trainers and subject matter experts through iterative development cycles.
- Ensure environments align with training objectives and can be adapted for evolving operational needs.
Highly desirable criteria
- Previous experience in simulation, VR training, or emergency response industries.
- Knowledge of optimisation techniques for VR and real-time rendering.
- Familiarity with advanced shaders, materials, and lighting workflows.
- Experience working with government or training-focused organisations.
Desirable criteria
- Exposure to Unity3D and WebGL projects.
- Understanding of real-time rendering constraints in large-scale environments.
- Experience integrating photogrammetry assets into complex environments.
Skills and experience
- A strong portfolio demonstrating environment design and realistic 3D scenes.
- Professional experience creating environments in Unreal Engine.
- Proficiency in 3D modelling, texturing, and environment creation tools such as Blender, Maya, 3ds Max, or Substance Painter.
- Strong understanding of Unreal Engine’s environment creation pipelines and tools.
- Competency in Blueprint scripting or equivalent workflows.
- Exceptional artistic ability with a strong eye for lighting, composition, and storytelling.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to adapt to operational and training requirements.
