About the role
This long-term contract role with a state government client involves leading the development and oversight of data and AI governance frameworks to ensure compliance, ethical integrity, and alignment with strategic priorities. Sitting within the Enterprise IT Solutions and Services division, the position plays a vital role in ensuring that data and AI initiatives across the organisation are ethical, secure, high-quality, and legally compliant. The role requires strong cross-functional collaboration, leadership in governance practices, and strategic advisory on risk and compliance related to data and AI use.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement strategies to enhance awareness and literacy in data and AI governance.
- Lead initiatives that assess and improve data governance maturity and resolve data quality issues.
- Review and update governance frameworks and policies in line with legal, regulatory, and technological changes.
- Ensure all data and AI-related initiatives adhere to ethical principles, privacy standards, and relevant legislation.
- Provide expert advice on ethical considerations in AI deployment to align with community values and public interest.
- Monitor and improve data quality to support reliable, consistent decision-making.
- Identify, assess, and advise on risks associated with data and AI use.
- Engage with internal and external stakeholders to promote and reinforce governance compliance.
Highly desirable criteria
- Tertiary qualifications in Data Science, Computer Science, Information Technology, Law, or a related field.
- Demonstrated experience in data governance, lifecycle management, AI ethics, or similar domains.
- Knowledge of relevant legislation such as the Information Privacy Act 2009 (QLD) and broader data protection laws.
- Excellent stakeholder engagement, consultation, and communication skills.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
Desirable criteria
- Familiarity with the Queensland Government’s enterprise data and digital strategies.
- Previous experience in public sector governance, compliance, or technology-led transformation initiatives.

- Skilled in building trusted relationships across departments and external partners.
