About the role
We are seeking an experienced AI Governance Advisor to support a major Queensland Government department in the safe, ethical and compliant adoption of Artificial Intelligence.
This role will focus on completing FAIRA assessments (Queensland Government’s foundational AI risk assessment framework) for AI-enabled tools currently in use, while contributing to the development and implementation of an enterprise-wide AI Governance Framework. You will play a key role in embedding structured governance, oversight, monitoring and education across the organisation.
Key responsibilities
- Coordinate, author and quality assure FAIRA assessments for AI-enabled applications and tools, working closely with privacy, security and ethics subject matter experts
- Liaise with solution and platform owners to obtain approvals and ensure compliance
- Support the design and implementation of an enterprise-wide AI Governance Framework aligned to State and Federal policy requirements
- Assist in establishing and operationalising an AI Governance Committee
- Develop scalable AI monitoring and reporting mechanisms covering model use, cost, benefit, performance, drift and incident management
- Translate governance requirements into practical playbooks, templates, processes and guidance materials
- Deliver targeted education and coaching sessions to business teams
- Conduct supplier due diligence relating to AI tools, including data handling practices, security attestations and model governance
Highly desirable criteria
- Demonstrated experience establishing and/or operating AI governance frameworks within complex organisations
- Strong understanding of risk integration, ethics oversight, assurance and audit readiness
- Expert knowledge of public sector AI frameworks and standards, including QGEA/IS18, Information Privacy Act 2009 (Qld), Privacy Act 1988 (Cth), AI Ethics Principles and relevant ISO standards (ISO 42001, ISO 23894, ISO 38507)
- Experience chairing or supporting governance committees and facilitating executive-level decision making
Desirable criteria
- Experience working within Queensland or broader Australian public sector environments
- Experience engaging external partners or vendors in the design and implementation of governance frameworks
- Familiarity with AI monitoring tools, reporting structures and performance oversight mechanisms
Skills and experience
- Strong governance leadership capability with the ability to translate technical risk into clear, business-relevant insights
- Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills
- Ability to work collaboratively across privacy, security, legal and technology domains
- Experience developing governance artefacts such as policies, standards, playbooks and reporting frameworks
- Strong analytical and documentation skills
