About the role
We are seeking an experienced Cyber Security Specialist to play a key role in protecting and enhancing the security posture of a large, complex ICT environment. This position is responsible for advanced threat detection, incident response, and proactive threat hunting within the organisation’s Security Operations Centre (SOC). You’ll work closely with internal teams and a Managed Service Provider (MSP) to ensure effective monitoring, analysis, and mitigation of cyber threats while contributing to continuous improvement of security operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitor and investigate cyber security alerts to identify, validate, and respond to threats and incidents.
- Contain, mitigate, and remediate security incidents using established procedures and playbooks.
- Conduct proactive threat hunting and enhance detection and response capabilities.
- Collaborate with internal teams, external partners, and the MSP to coordinate incident response.
- Perform root cause analysis, recommend corrective actions, and document lessons learned.
- Contribute to security awareness, SOC process improvement, and incident response documentation.
- Liaise with external cyber security bodies on incident coordination and reporting obligations.
Skills and Experience
- Proven experience in a Security Operations Centre (SOC) or similar cyber defence environment.
- Strong knowledge of incident detection, triage, analysis, and response methodologies.
- Hands-on experience with SIEM, EDR, and other security monitoring tools.
- Understanding of network protocols, vulnerability management, and system hardening.
- Proficiency in applying frameworks such as NIST, ISO 27001, and the ACSC Essential Eight.
- Excellent problem-solving, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and make sound, data-driven decisions.
Desirable
- Tertiary qualifications in Information Technology, Computer Science, or Cyber Security.
- Industry certifications such as CompTIA Security+, CySA+, GIAC (GCIA, GCIH), CISSP, or CISM.
- Experience working in government or critical infrastructure environments.
