About the role

Our federal government client is looking for a Lead Data Manager who will be responsible for delivering solutions and support for the department’s evolving database environment consisting of SQL Server systems hosted on prem and in the Azure Cloud as well as some legacy Linux hosted data platforms. 
 

Key responsibilities

• Overseeing compliance and health of the database fleet, driving database automation initiatives for repeatable requirements, and developing service capabilities in the Azure cloud.
• Managing and overseeing the health of database fleet, including reviewing SQL server clusters to improve system performance
• Ensuring the effective delivery, operation and maintenance of SQL Server clustered implementations and Azure SQL Managed Instance systems.
• Patching management of SQL databases in compliance with ISM controls, in line with policy and best practice management of database fleet in accordance with ISM policy guidelines
• Management and oversight of data repositories, ensuring best practice in alignment with Cyber practices, governance and doctrine of IT practices
• Working across IT and Business to respond to tickets for support to business activities and business improvement activities as required
• Skilled Senior SQL Server DBA with a passion for data, automation and designing robust, reliable systems.
• Required to be available for after-hours escalation support through a roster-based system.
• Perform additional duties or assume responsibility of functions as directed by the Direct/Team Leader from time to time.

Essential criteria

• Production operational support of Microsoft SQL Server 2016 through to 2019 and Azure SQLMI platforms and automation of SQL Server processes using PowerShell and T-SQL.
• T-SQL skills including performance analysis of T-SQL queries, assisting developer teams with T-SQL query techniques, database design and modelling and experience in building data pipelines and integration systems in support of operational and data warehousing needs.
• Proven and demonstrable skills in SQL Server Reporting Services, SQL Server Integration Services, SQL XML, SQL JSON and PowerShell.
• Delivery of SQL Server database systems built to high standards with continual assurance that the existing fleet meets agency expectations in-line with ACSC compliance standards, including the development and management of system monitoring reports/dashboards and alerting systems.
• Ability to work with Cyber and security compliance teams to address emerging vulnerabilities and investigate security incidents.
• Troubleshooting production incidents using T-SQL querying, SQL Query store, SSIS, SSRS and SQL Server logs as required with clear communication to customers on the issue, root cause and its impact.

Desirable criteria

• Data modelling and management experience.
• Experience with data visualisation products including PowerBI.
• Proven understanding of the SQL Server Database architecture, internals, clustering and performance tuning as well as knowledge of SQL Server high availability options both on Prem and in the Azure cloud.
• Experience working in Linux environments and experience with RDBMS products, for example Postgres, Ingres, MySQL, Cosmos DB.
