About the role

We are seeking a motivated, proactive and technically skilled LIMS Administrator to support and enhance a critical Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) within a scientific laboratory environment.

In this role, you will manage and support the Sample Manager LIMS, working closely with business stakeholders, ICT teams and technical specialists to troubleshoot issues, develop system enhancements and improve functionality. You will contribute to the effective operation of laboratory systems through system administration, database management, software configuration, testing and technical documentation.
 

Key responsibilities

• Administer and support the LIMS, including system configuration, troubleshooting, bug fixing and user account management.
• Liaise with business stakeholders to gather requirements and develop new functionality and system enhancements.
• Develop and maintain LIMS functionality using proprietary programming languages and relevant scripting technologies.
• Prepare technical specifications, conduct software testing and implement enhancements in accordance with change control procedures.
• Manage database queries and data corrections using SQL, ensuring data integrity and accuracy.
• Develop and maintain interfaces to facilitate data exchange between LIMS and other systems.
• Perform routine system maintenance, including data archiving, backups and access reviews.
• Provide technical support and training to staff on the use of LIMS.
• Develop and maintain technical documentation, standard operating procedures (SOPs), processes and test plans.
• Generate financial, management and statistical reports for senior management.
• Liaise with software vendors to resolve core system issues and work collaboratively with ICT teams across databases, servers, security and networks.
• Support system upgrades, testing, issue resolution and outage management.
• Maintain quality control measures and contribute to a safe, inclusive and collaborative working environment.

Highly desirable criteria

• Practical experience administering a LIMS, particularly Sample Manager or a similar system used in a scientific or analytical laboratory.
• Experience with VGL, LIMS Basics or other programming languages used to customise and enhance LIMS functionality.
• Sound knowledge of database administration, including using SQL to extract information and resolve data-related issues.
• Understanding of scientific laboratory operations and the role of LIMS in supporting laboratory workflows.

Desirable criteria

• Experience with .NET C#, Visual Basic, Java and HTML.
• Experience developing and maintaining system interfaces and data exchange processes.
• Familiarity with system upgrades, change management, quality control and software testing.
• Experience preparing technical documentation, SOPs and test plans.
• Experience generating management, financial or statistical reports.
• Familiarity with standard IT applications and working collaboratively with ICT teams and external software vendors.

Skills and experience

• Demonstrated experience in system administration, technical support and application troubleshooting.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to investigate and resolve complex technical issues.
• Ability to learn new systems and technologies quickly and apply sound judgement in a dynamic environment.
• Experience processing data and working with standard desktop applications.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain technical information to business stakeholders.
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build productive relationships and work effectively within a team.
• Ability to work independently when required, manage competing priorities and deliver tasks within agreed timeframes.
• A proactive approach, with a high level of initiative, self-motivation and commitment to achieving business outcomes.
