About the Role

Our federal government client is looking for a Senior Network Engineer who can design, build, and support data center network, mainframe, midrange, server, desktop, security, and network infrastructure capabilities, both in-house and in a shared service environment. This role involves managing the organisation’s network infrastructure, including WAN, LAN, WLAN, firewalls, routers, and switches, as well as computing infrastructure components. Operating with a high level of autonomy, the Senior Network Engineer will contribute to and implement strategic direction, drive innovation, and lead change within the agency.

Key Responsibilities

• Plan and manage infrastructure requirements to meet future demands
• Provide operational support for hardware, software, and assets
• Define procedures for prioritisation and escalation of infrastructure issues
• Communicate end-to-end implications of configuration changes
• Analyse change requests and provide detailed technical advice
• Act as a subject matter expert, mentoring less experienced colleagues
• Develop standards, strategies, policies, and procedures for infrastructure operations
• Lead teams by setting direction, work priorities, and managing resources
• Develop staff capability through coaching, mentoring, and succession planning
• Negotiate with suppliers and vendors for technology purchases
• Oversee development and performance of contracted goods and services
• Review technical documentation, including design and implementation plans
• Manage relationships with other agencies and service providers
• Participate in interagency forums to influence outcomes and share information
• Drive innovation, continuous improvement, and lead change initiatives
• Contribute to business plans and ICT strategies
• Exercise delegation in line with legislation and guidelines

Essential Criteria

• A current security clearance of at least Negative Vetting Level 1
• Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in the design, management, and maintenance of large-scale data center networking environments
• Proven experience in developing network high-level and detailed designs
• Strong ability to create and implement design and configuration plans
• Advanced diagnostic and problem-solving skills
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team

Weighted Criteria

• Solid knowledge in design and configuration of Networking, Wireless LAN, and Software-Defined Networks (SDN)
• Experience in the design and integration of enterprise networks
• Proficiency in configuring and maintaining network devices, including Cisco Catalyst, Nexus Switches, Cisco ACI, F5 Load Balancers, DNS, network proxy, and firewalls
• Expertise in dynamic routing protocols, especially EIGRP, OSPF, and BGP
• Experience in creating and maintaining system architecture and design documentation
• Familiarity with network management tools for troubleshooting, performance statistics, and reporting
• Knowledge of Australian Government information security policies, ASD Information Security Manual, and Essential Eight compliance
