About the role
Our State Government client is seeking an experienced System Administrator or Senior System Administrator to join the Application Hosting Windows team. In this role, you will support and enhance the Windows, SQL and web server platforms that underpin critical departmental applications, while ensuring the stability, security and performance of enterprise hosting environments.
You will work across Microsoft and cloud technologies including Windows Server, SQL Server, IIS, Azure and AWS, while contributing to automation, infrastructure provisioning and continuous improvement initiatives. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with strong Microsoft infrastructure experience who enjoys scripting, cloud technologies and modern infrastructure automation.
Key responsibilities
- Administer, configure, monitor and support Windows, SQL and web server environments.
- Manage Microsoft Operations and Configuration Manager, including alerting, monitoring, deployments and patching.
- Administer Active Directory, including Group Policy, security groups and identity management.
- Support Azure and AWS environments, including Azure SQL PaaS, SQL Managed Instance, EC2 and virtual machines.
- Monitor system health and ensure platform stability, reliability and performance.
- Provide operational support and troubleshoot infrastructure issues.
- Develop and maintain PowerShell scripts, Azure Runbooks, Terraform code and GitHub Actions for automation.
- Produce and maintain system, operational and procedural documentation.
- Work collaboratively with internal teams to deliver reliable infrastructure services.
For Senior System Administrator candidates, additional responsibilities include:
- Lead system upgrades, migrations and technology implementation projects.
- Identify and implement improvements to increase system performance, reliability and efficiency.
- Produce system design documentation for supported technology platforms.
- Assess emerging technologies and contribute to strategic planning.
- Mentor and provide technical guidance to other team members.
Skills and experience
Essential
- Strong experience administering Microsoft Windows Server environments.
- Hands on experience supporting SQL Server (2012 to 2025) and IIS.
- Experience administering Azure and/or AWS infrastructure.
- Strong PowerShell scripting skills, including automation, functions, error handling and conditional logic.
- Experience using GitHub for version control and script management.
- Experience with infrastructure automation and configuration management.
- Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage competing priorities and work independently as well as within a team.
- Strong documentation skills.
- Commitment to knowledge sharing and continuous improvement.
Desirable criteria
- Experience with Terraform for provisioning Azure IaaS and PaaS services.
- Experience with Azure Runbooks, GitHub Actions and CI/CD pipelines.
- Knowledge of DevOps methodologies and Git workflows.
- Experience with Azure Stack.
- Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect certification.
- AWS Certified Solutions Architect certification.
- Experience producing infrastructure or system design documentation.
- Experience mentoring or leading technical team members.
- Knowledge of the SFIA Framework across infrastructure operations, system administration, system design, incident management and change management.
