About the role 

Our Federal Government client is seeking an experienced Senior Drupal Web Developer to join their team. This role is ideal for a developer who enjoys working across both frontend and backend development while helping maintain and enhance a high-profile government website.

Working within a small, collaborative web team, you will play a key role in supporting and improving Drupal platforms, developing new functionality, resolving complex technical issues, and ensuring websites meet Australian Government standards for security, accessibility, usability and performance.

You will also work closely with internal stakeholders and external vendors to deliver practical, high-quality digital solutions that support the organisation’s communication and engagement objectives.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, maintain and enhance Drupal websites, including custom module development.
• Support the ongoing improvement of internal and external web platforms.
• Design and develop frontend interfaces and backend functionality for websites and web applications.
• Develop and release new website features and enhancements.
• Monitor, investigate and resolve complex technical issues relating to website performance, caching, integrations and background processing.
• Improve website performance, security and reliability.
• Support accessibility, usability and user-centred design initiatives in line with Australian Government standards.
• Prepare and publish website content using best practice digital publishing standards.
• Collaborate with internal stakeholders to understand business requirements and deliver effective technical solutions.
• Work with infrastructure teams and external service providers to ensure hosting environments meet technical and business requirements.
• Participate in code reviews, testing, quality assurance and source control processes.
• Assist with procurement activities by documenting technical requirements for vendors.

Desirable criteria

• Experience working within Australian Government digital environments.
• Strong stakeholder engagement skills with the ability to build productive working relationships across business and technical teams.
• Experience working with external vendors and managed service providers.
• Understanding of Australian Government digital standards, accessibility requirements and best practice web governance.

Skills and experience

• Extensive experience developing and maintaining Drupal websites.
• Strong experience building and maintaining custom Drupal modules.
• Solid understanding of PHP, HTML, CSS, JavaScript and modern web development practices.
• Experience improving website performance, security and analytics.
• Strong understanding of accessibility standards, usability principles and user-centred design.
• Experience troubleshooting complex web application issues across caching, integrations and platform performance.
• Experience managing source control, code reviews, testing and quality assurance processes.
• Ability to collaborate with infrastructure specialists to support server and network configurations.
• Strong problem solving, communication and stakeholder management skills.
• Experience working within Agile or collaborative delivery environments.
