About the role 

Our Federal Government client is looking for an experienced Java Developer to join a high performing technology team responsible for developing, enhancing and supporting enterprise critical applications. You will play a key role in designing, building and maintaining scalable Java solutions, contributing to the delivery of modern, secure and reliable software that supports essential business operations.

Working within a collaborative environment, you will partner with technical teams and business stakeholders to deliver new functionality, improve existing applications and support ongoing technology modernisation initiatives. This role offers the opportunity to work across the full software development lifecycle while contributing to application support, continuous improvement and strategic technology outcomes.

This is an excellent opportunity to work on large scale, mission critical systems while contributing to long term digital transformation initiatives within a Federal Government environment.

Key responsibilities

  • Design, develop, implement and test enterprise Java applications in line with business requirements and development standards.
  • Enhance, maintain and support enterprise applications across a complex ICT environment.
  • Investigate, troubleshoot and resolve application issues while ensuring system stability and performance.
  • Modify, repair and improve existing software to increase efficiency and support changing business requirements.
  • Produce high quality technical and solution design documentation.
  • Collaborate with developers, technical specialists and business stakeholders to deliver successful project outcomes.
  • Contribute to project planning, progress reporting and governance activities.
  • Mentor junior developers and share technical knowledge across the team.
  • Build and maintain effective stakeholder relationships across technical and business areas.
  • Make informed technical decisions while adhering to legislation, policies and organisational standards.
  • Support operational readiness activities and assist during peak delivery periods, including occasional work outside standard business hours when required.
  • Undertake additional duties as required to support project and operational outcomes.

Skills and experience

  • Demonstrated experience developing enterprise applications using Java and Java EE.
  • Strong experience designing, developing, testing and supporting scalable software solutions.
  • Experience working across the full software development lifecycle.
  • Ability to prioritise competing workloads and deliver quality outcomes within agreed timeframes and budgets.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills with a focus on continuous improvement.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to engage technical and non technical stakeholders.
  • Experience working within enterprise or large scale ICT environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and support junior developers.
  • High level of professionalism, integrity and sound judgement.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a collaborative team.
  • Active NV1 security clearance required prior to commencement.

Desirable criteria

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in Information Technology or a related discipline.
  • Experience performing enterprise software version upgrades.
  • Experience with SAS Programming and/or PostScript, including troubleshooting document rendering, managing print streams and supporting enterprise output systems.
  • Knowledge of Australian Government ICT environments and frameworks.
  • Ability to quickly understand complex business domains and legislative environments.
